Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's 1977 Peugeot 504 has received a USD 1 million bid in a charity auction organized to raise money for a housing project.
According to Iran Daily, the 34-year-old white sedan has so far received many bids from foreign countries, including a USD 1 million offer which was made only a day after the car was put up for sales.
IRNA quoted head of Iran's National Welfare Organization Ahmad Esfandiari on January 1, 2011, as saying that “the bid had been made from an Arab country,” without providing further information about the proposal.
A multilingual website has been set up for the auction which is expected to fund a housing project for disabled Iranians.
Online offers will be received at ahmadinejad-car.com until the end of January and top bidders will be invited to participate in the auction, which will be held in Iran's southwestern city of Abadan in mid-February.
The registration fee is $67 for foreign bidders and around $50 for Iranians.
President Ahmadinejad has arranged the auction in an effort to raise enough funds for building 60,000 houses for the disabled and low-income women who are providing for their families.
The Iranian president used to drive the white Peugeot 504 when he served as the mayor of Tehran before becoming president in 2005. The vehicle would be worth around $2,000 on the local market.
Following his re-election last year, President Ahmadinejad vowed to put “housing, employment and economic reform” at the top of his agenda.
